Recap of 2013-2014 School Year

7/1/2014

The end of summer break is fast approaching, and the students and staff will be returning to MSD in August for another school year.

Just as we have in years past, the MSDPO provided much needed support to students, teachers, and staff at MSD during the 2013-2014 school year. This support included:

  • Purchase of shirts for the September and December Red Cross Blood Drives sponsored by the MSD National Honor Society and the Student Council. These drives topped their collection goals for the first time ever, and helped earn a scholarship for one graduating MSD Senior.
  • Purchase of shirts for the Music in Motion team that performed at the St. Louis Rams game in November.
  • Purchase of special commemorative shirts to honor the Boys Basketball team that repeated as champions of the 2014 Great Plains Schools for the Deaf Basketball Tournament.
  • Purchase of supplies used by students to build a float they entered into the Fulton Jaycees Winter Holiday Parade.
  • Purchased the second place trophies for the Great Plains Schools for the Deaf Basketball Tournament hosted by MSD in February.
  • Sponsored the MSD football team preview in the annual Mid-Missouri Pigskin Preview.
  • Donated the prizes for the MSD Student Talent Show in April.
  • Made a donation to the Senior Class of 2014 to help fund a special event during their Senior trip.
  • Awarded the “Eager Eagle Awards” to students at the year-end awards ceremonies.
  • Donated the book Historic MSD by Richard Reed to all graduating seniors.
  • Joined the Missouri School for the Deaf Alumni Association in awarding a $500.00 scholarship to the 2014 salutatorian.
  • Joined the Missouri School for the Deaf Alumni Association in awarding a $500.00 scholarship to the 2014 valedictorian.
  • Honored MSD staff during Staff Appreciation Week by purchasing two cakes.

We were able to provide this support, thanks to the continued generosity of everyone that purchased the MSD Cookbook and other items during our special sales promotions, and at our Fall and Winter Homecoming booths. All of you helped to make this one of our best years ever. Currently, we are planning our sales campaigns for next year. Once again, we will be updating everyone through our Facebook site on new items that will be available for purchase. If you are not already a friend of our site, be sure to join. You can find us under “Missouri School for the Deaf Parents’ Organization”. You may also preview and order merchandise online through our MSDPO web site at www.msdpo.org .

Our efforts were also helped by the continued growth of the Box Tops for Education program. In 2011-2012 (our first year in the program) we earned $215.00.  In 2012-2013 we earned $263.30. In 2013-2014 we had our best year yet! We earned $478.20, almost surpassing our goal for the year of $500.00. We are looking for even greater support in 2014-2015 as we try to top our goal of $750.00  Please continue to collect those Box Tops. With your help, I know we can reach it!

Since our son graduated from MSD in May 2014, my wife and I will be looking for parents during the 2014-2015 school year that are willing to take over the leadership of the MSDPO, and continue the tradition of supporting MSD students, teachers, and staff in the years to come. If you are interesting in finding out more about the organization or want to join us, we will be holding an informational meeting on Saturday, August 23, 2014. We will post information about the meeting on our Facebook site (please friend us if you haven’t already). Contact us at msdparentorg@gmail.com if you have any questions about the meeting or the MSDPO.

We are excited about the upcoming year, and look forward to your participation.

The 2011-2012 School Year A Busy One

Last year was a busy year for the MSDPO as we continued our efforts to improve the visibility of the organization, and took steps to guarantee its financial stability. One of the largest efforts we undertook was to implement both the Box Tops for Education and the My Coke Rewards for Schools programs. Through the collection and redemption of both Box Tops and Coke Rewards points, the MSDPO earns valuable funds that are used to purchase items that help advance the educational opportunities for all MSD students. We encourage you to  look under “Fundraising Opportunities” on this site to find out how you can help with these efforts. Also be looking for the monthly Box Tops Update newsletter that contains information on promotions and savings on Box Top products. We will send this home with your student on home going weekends.

Another effort we undertook was to create and offer new MSD-themed merchandise. Throughout the school year, and during the Fall and Winter Homecomings, new products and designs were unveiled. These included hats, pull-over jackets, long and short-sleeved shirts, and hoodies. Besides boosting school spirit, these new products helped the MSDPO have two of the most successful sales efforts at both the Fall and Winter Homecomings. Already, new products are being developed for the next school year. We will be releasing information on these new items through our Facebook and Twitter pages. If you are not already a member, be sure to join. You can find us under “Missouri School for the Deaf Parents’ Organization”. You can also preview and order merchandise online through our MSDPO web site.

Fundraising is just a small part of what we do as a parent organization. The primary reason we exist is to support the students, teachers, and staff at MSD. The proceeds earned from fundraising projects are used to purchase items for the dorms, provide summer camp and college scholarships, obtain supplies for instructors, and for other projects that support our mission of  “improving the education, recreation, health, and employment opportunities” for all MSD students. During the 2011-2012 school year, the MSDPO provided support through the following:

  • Purchase of polo shirts with a specially designed logo to be used by students participating in Academic Bowl competitions. Prior to the purchase of these shirts, students were wearing t-shirts to the competitions.

  • Purchase of an eagle-themed area rug to help with the renovations of the Eagles Nest, where students go to socialize.

  • Donated items that were used in the making of a basket for the Senior Class fundraiser at the Fall Homecoming.

  • Sponsored the MSD football team preview in the annual Mid-Missouri Pigskin Preview.

  • Donated the prizes for the MSD Student Talent Show in May.

  • Provided a donation to the student-led effort to raise funds for the Puppies for Parole program.

  • Awarded the “Eager Eagle Awards” to students at the year-end awards ceremonies.

  • Donated the book Historic MSD by Richard Reed to all graduating seniors.

  • Joined the Missouri School for the Deaf Alumni Association in awarding $500.00 scholarships to the 2012 valedictorian and salutatorian.

  • Provided scholarships to assist students with summer camp enrollment fees.

  • Donated items for the bags distributed at the ASL Parents Camp held in June 2012.

We are looking forward to another successful and exciting effort during the 2012-2013 school year. Why don’t you join us? We would love to hear your ideas, and would welcome your involvement.

Back to School Message

Hello MSD Parents and Guardians:

My name is Jeff Patridge. I am the Interim President of the Missouri School for the Deaf Parents’ Organization (MSDPO). Since I am writing this message to you, that means summer is half over. It seems like only yesterday that I was presenting awards to many of your children at the end-of- year awards ceremonies.

I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to the MSDPO, let you know about the exciting changes that are happening, and ask you to join us as we transform the organization to meet the challenges of the Social Network era.

The MSDPO is a non-profit organization that has supported Missouri School for the Deaf administrators, educators, and students for thirty years. The proceeds earned from fundraising projects are used to purchase objects for the dorms, provide summer camp and college scholarships, obtain supplies for instructors, and for other projects that support its mission of “improving the education, recreation, health, and employment opportunities” for all MSD students. All funds earned by the organization are returned to MSD.

As I stated in a recent article in the Missouri Record (Winter/Spring 2010), the MSDPO is experiencing the impact of changes in our society. These changes have led to families having less time to join organizations like the MSDPO, and parents and friends that are geographically dispersed throughout Missouri. As a result of these changes, participation in MSDPO meetings, fundraisers, and other activities has dwindled.

To reverse this trend, the MSDPO is evolving. We have taken several steps to improve communication with parents and friends, boost participation, and increase our fundraising efforts. Among the steps we have already taken include the purchase of a web domain name (www.msdpo.org) and the creation of a MSDPO web page. Facebook and Twitter pages have been developed, and an organization-specific email address has been obtained for correspondence (msdparentorg@gmail.com).
Over the next several months, we will continue to do more. Among the changes were are planning to implement include web-based chat meetings, using our web page and social networking sites to inform you of upcoming meetings and activities, expanding our selection of fundraising items, and implementing online purchasing options that allow for the use of debit and credit cards to purchase those items.

As you can see, these are some very exciting times for the MSDPO. Why don’t you join us? We would love to hear your ideas, and would welcome your help in transforming this organization to meet the challenges of this new era.

If you would like to help us move forward, or are just interesting in finding out more about the MSDPO and its activities, visit our web site (www.msdpo.org), select “Join Us”, and complete the online information form. You can also send us an email at msdparentorg@gmail.com.
